Define Lorentz Force.
The Lorentz Force named after the Dutch physicist Hendrik Lorentz, describes the electromagnetic force exerted on a charged particle (q) moving with velocity (v) through an electric field (E) and magnetic field (B). The entire electromagnetic force F on the charged particle is called the Lorentz Force. It is given by the formula :
F = q(E + v × B)
where :
- F represents the Lorentz force experienced by the particle,
- q denotes the charge of the particle,
- E represents the electric field through which the particle moves,
- v represents the velocity vector of the particle,
- × denotes the cross product, and
- B represents the magnetic field through which the particle moves.
The Left-Hand Rule, also known as Fleming's Left-Hand Rule, is a mnemonic technique for determining the direction of the Lorentz Force on a moving charged particle in a magnetic field. An alternative way to remember this rule involves using the acronym FBI to label your fingers. In this case, the index finger (B) represents the magnetic field, the middle finger (F) represents the force, and the thumb (I) represents the current. By holding these three fingers at right angles to each other, you can visually represent the relationship between the directions of the current (I), force (F), and magnetic field (B). This mnemonic aids in quickly determining the direction of the lorentz force in electromagnetic interactions.
